Sunday Morning Fun

Today I spent a few hours volunteering for the zoo at KidsFest. When I originally volunteered I heard a lot of people tell me I'd regret it, since KidsFest can be a madhouse. So I was prepared going in that I might very well have wished I'd never signed up. But I was completely surprised. It wasn't that bad at all. Of course, I did work the early shift, so that helped, but for the most part, people were friendly and the chaos was at a minimum. I did see a few interesting things, but the most surprising was a 3 year old girl with mascara on. Mascara! How do you even get a 3 year old to sit still to get mascara on?!

The local TV sponsor of the event had its booth directly across from the zoo, so in the few slow periods, I could watch local news anchors tape segments with kids. They also had their helicopter in the building, so that was interesting to see. I'm sure it was a hit with kids.

This whole event vastly differed from all of my other zoo volunteering as I've pretty much only fed the giraffes and helped with the education animals. All in all, I found it was a great experience, but I can't wait for the warmer weather when I can get back to the giraffes.

I used to volunteer at the zoo. In my former life. When I made time for things like that. I used to help clean up Australia and the rainforest and put together bat diet. I wish I was better with my time now so I could do it again. Until that time, I will live vicariously through you.

That's cool. I got to "pet" the bat in the education area once. People I know were so creeped out by that (also the fact that I like to carry the ball python around for people to touch).

I'll be sure to post more pictures and stories when I get back there more regularly.

Sounds as though he had a great time.
I like Bats - we have one that visits most evenings in the summer time - you can almost set your watch by the time it arrives. It actually got in the house one night into my son's bedroom - he woke up with it flying around his head !
Not too good with snakes though !

I'm glad it wasn't chaos! Maybe they've improved the organization of that event. Or, maybe it was because you had an early shift. or, maybe it's never that bad and I have no tolerance for crowds of children. :)
